Stump Grinding

Frequently asked questions tree stump removal

Stump grinding vs removal...which is better?

My stumps have termite activity, can you still stump grind them?

Are you left with any materials on site after stump grinding?

Technically, there is a big difference, but generally these mean the same thing in terms of getting rid of the stump. The difference is how. Removing the entire stump can be far more intrusive than grinding and requires heavy powerful machinery. It also takes a lot longer and you are left with the headache of removing the large root ball off site and dumping costs. Grinding the stump to below ground level is a straightforward process and the least intrusive to the surrounding grounds.

Are you left with any materials on site after stump grinding?

Yes. As the stump grinding process involves shredding and cutting of the stump into smaller chips, similar to a woodchip mulch and  product. These materials are most often raked back over the area where the stump was to fill in the hole and left to naturally decay. Alternatively, we can rake these into a seperate pile if you have other plans for the area where the stump was...this is completely up to you.

Our best advice in this situation is that you should really have the termites treated by a professional first. Termites won't prevent us from grinding the stump, however you run the risk of dispersing live ants throughout your yard. When the termites are disturbed or their home is destroyed, they may find their way into other areas of your yard...or worse, into your home. It is always best to treat the nest first.

Do you cut down trees?

How deep do you grind the stump? Can I put a plant in that area again?

My stumps have termite activity, can you still stump grind them?

No. We can grind the stump away after you or an arborist has cut it down. Our operator can chainsaw the stumps to a lower level if needed, before the grinding process begins. If you are having trees cut down, ideally you would want them cut down to approximately 20cm or lower. This is an ideal height to begin the stump grinding process and saves everyone time and money in the long run.

Typically the stumps will be ground to about 15cm below ground level. In most cases, there would be no issue planting a small plant or shrub directly into the area. Just let your operator know your plans, as we may be able to grind a little further down to help better prepare the area for a new plant.
